Meet super-stylist, Soki Mak, our latest woman on the BabyFace board. It’s easier to list what Soki Mak has yet to achieve as opposed to all she has, because, quite frankly, how long have you got? Born and raised in Scotland, the now North London resident has collaborated with Pammy Anderson several times and is fashion week’s most photographed show-goer. The Glaswegian’s work is as vibrant as her hair and as sparkling as her tongue-in-cheek style. The women she works with are 2015’s brightest bombshells from Amber Rose, Marina Diamonds, Pamela Anderson, Paris Hilton to Iggy Azealea. Like some living, breathing fashion mermaid, she’s a mirage; we’ve never seen a hair out of place in all honesty.
Whilst interning at Vivienne Westwood during holiday breaks from Central St Martins Soki met seems of stylists who would come in through Viv’s doors too pull for their clients. As Soki quietly watched on taking note of the processes and admiring their eye from afar, somebody else was paying attention too… one day one of the regular stylists phoned up and asked her boss if he could borrow Soki to assist on a shoot. She never went back. Call it coincidence, call it divine intervention, call it whatever you like but the girl from Glasgow with no nepotistic fashion contacts to call her own, had suddenly popped her pink stilettoed heel in the door and things were never the same. Soki’s touch is instantly decipherable; hyper-real, super-touched up, sexy, fantasy, U-V palette- absolute perfection. The models become cyborgs, the studio becomes film set and Soki’s images social-media sensations. Her styling is regularly plotted in the fashion tomes Dazed and Confused, i-D, Nylon, The Hunger, Oyster and ShowStudio. She shops in the stripper shops down Hollywood boulevard and is owner of one of the most coveted vintage wardrobes in London; think down print stetsons; WKD blue furs and skill ball gowns- of a Wednesday lunchtime.
The fashion lot were quick to collaboratively turn their heads and pay attention to Soki’s work with Nick Knight being one of the first people to offer Soki a platform; she’s now a regular ShowStudio panelist after Nick reached out to her via email and asked her to style the side bar of shame’s most talked-about, Courtney Stodden for SHOWstudio- and, the rest is fashion history. To boot she surrounds herself with equally well heeled feminist success stories with her former-flatmates consisting WAH Nails’ Sharmadean Reid and DJ and singer, Yasmin; we’re sure some major ‘taking over the world’ plans occurred in that flat. That’s the thing we love most about Soki, besides her huge body of work- is her love of women and the strong collective of females she works and surrounds herself with. She’s everything BabyFace stands for. Welcome, Soki.
