Amelia is twenty years old and in her second year at Central St Martins studying for a degree in Fashion Journalism. We spent most of our second year fending off mice from our bedroom, falling asleep in the library, taking mephedrone, crying about boys and getting high watching YouTube videos. If you're in your second year, anywhere (go you) you'll have the time to type Amelia's name into YouTube. Yeah that's her, fried chicken in mouth, chatting to grime legend Ghetts about cats. Yeah it's got 18,000 views and yes she did just win the Guardian's 'Student Broadcast Journalist of the Year.'
We're talking about Chicken Shop Date and for those of you that haven't yet peeped at her other 'Chicken Shop Dates' where Amelia sits down with musicians for a candle lit dinner at some of the UK's finest poultry establishments (minus the candle light), you need to. It began as a feature for The Cut and fast flourished to an online YouTube channel which Amelia produces herself and edits with her friend Marvin. A favourite hot date of ours has to be the Lethal Bizzle one; why? Well firstly because, it's Lethal B, secondly because Amelia decides that 'this date was going to be better than any other dates to Chicken Cottage I’d been on, because this Chicken Cottage had booth seating' and thirdly because of Amelia's ma's response to the hook up: 'my mother was incredibly excited when I told her I was going on a date with Lethal Bizzle, partly because she wants me to get a boyfriend and partly because she has just discovered the word Dench' #denchchat #realtalk. According to Amelia, grime artists are the most compliant. 'The hardest part of it all is persuading someone to go with me (quite sad really) I send about 50 emails before the production of each episode to managers of artists and personalities, grime artists are the only ones who reply!'. Men + free chicken + hot lady? We're not convinced.
While not busy dating in fast food restaurants Amelia is occupying herself furrowing away as a freelance journalist. She wrote her first piece for i-D just age 18 and has contributed to household names Dazed, Soho House Mag and The Cut. Oh, and when she's not busy completing her degree, or filing articles on the go, you'll find Amelia interning for Ella Dror PR or cult faux-fur brand, Shrimps. When we asked Amelia what's next, her response was 'well, last week I wanted to write about fashion for a newspaper and this week I want to work in the comedy department of Channel 4! Big dreams!.' Meh, we've got a feeling that those big dreams aren't that far from Amelia's grasp. Bet you don't look at your local KFC the same ever, again. *
*boys get no ideas, this is not an apropos date venue.
